Ashes To Ashes

In case you didn't know, Ashes to Ashes is a new BBC America TV show from the same producers as the original "Life on Mars". The difference this time is that the detective is a woman and instead of being sent back to 1973, she lands in 1981.

Ashes to Ashes was also a great David Bowie song and video from 1981. The video features Bowie in a full harlequin get-up and hanging in space as a drugged out Major Tom. There are also nuns, clerics, bulldozers, exploding dentist's chairs, and Bowie's mom.

The harlequin features prominently in the first episode of the show, and it's a great emulation of the Bowie character. To make it even weirder, the Bowie video features Steve Strange, who later went on to front New Romantic band Visage. Strange also gets a guest appearance on the TV show in Episode 2.

To make it even more special, 1981 was the year I made my first trip to England, so the show has some real cultural gravitas for me. Plus each week it features a great soundtrack:

Battlestar Galactica, episode 4.17 - "No Exit"

Ron Moore is a liar. You want proof? I give you proof. Anders lies in bed, with a bullet in his head:

Dorothy lies in bed, fresh from a bump on the head. When she wakes up:

Just to make sure you get it, Starbuck tells Anders that the Cylons are waiting to hear the rest of their life story: "I think they're hoping for a musical." Ya think?

Some of you may recall a pretty bad John Boorman movie from the early seventies called "Zardoz". It featured the one true God, a floating head:

And of course, Sean Connery in a pre-incarnate Speedo:

At the climax of the film, Connery discovers his "god" is inspired by a very old book, where he is told to "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain."

This is followed by Connery going on a killing rampage.

My plans to travel to Radcon in Pasco this weekend with tbclone47 have fallen apart, after I booked my hotel and con membership, of course.

My mom has been in the hospital all week in coronary ICU. Looks like she is going to go home tomorrow sometime, though. And my spouse is in Texas tending to her cousin, who has been in a hospital in San Antonio for a week with renal failure. She may be able to return to her home in Michigan this weekend.

Since the spouse will be gone, there is no one to feed and watch our pets, so I have to stay and do that job. Instead of parties and panels and toxic waste and hanging with the local SF crowd, I get three dogs, two cats, plus BSG, Dollhouse, and Sarah Connor Chronicles.

It doth suck.

So I sent an email off to Major New York Publisher who has my full manuscript for Reunion Day on January 23rd, politely asking them their intentions towards my book. They've had the full at their request since early April '08. So far I haven't heard a thing back.

So how long is it polite to wait before I ping them again?
